Wakȟáŋ Tȟáŋka: Spirit Within Project is a 3-year (2018-2021) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Tribal Practices for Wellness in Indian Country (TPWIC) funded program. The Spirit Within Project (SWP) aims to cultivate the protective factors of traditional and cultural practices to address and prevent health disparities such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Three strategies the SWP focuses on include collaborative community engagement, traditional foods, traditional movement and contemporary physical activity.
Community Input
The SWP is driven by community involvement through focus groups, stakeholder interviews, and an advisory committee.
We asked our community to identify activities and events they would like to see through this program. In addition, a community survey was distributed to assess traditional foods, traditional movement, physical activity, and overall well-being. Read the results from our community assessment, provided by John Snow, Inc.
