What is a Mini-Cog Screening?

What is a Mini-Cog Screening?

A Mini-Cog is a short memory and thinking check that takes only a few minutes to complete. It helps health care providers look for possible changes in memory or thinking.

The Mini-Cog is not a test that you pass or fail. It is a screening tool, just like checking your blood pressure, blood sugar, or cholesterol.

At DIHFS, patients age 50 and older are offered a Mini-Cog screening as part of their routine care.

Why is Screening important?

Brain health is an important part of overall health. Screening can help:

  • Identify memory or thinking changes early

  • Start conversations with your health care provider

  • Connect patients and families with support and resources

  • Track changes in brain health over time

Why does DIHFS screen patients ages 50 and older?

At DIHFS, we know that brain health is an important part of healthy aging. Memory and thinking changes can sometimes begin earlier than people expect.

One in six American Indian and Alaska Native adults age 45 and older reports memory or thinking difficulties.

Because of this, DIHFS offers brain health screenings starting at age 50. Screening helps us look for possible changes early, track brain health over time, and connect patients and families with support and resources when needed.

Take the Next Step

If you have noticed changes in memory or thinking, or if you are concerned about a loved one, talk with your DIHFS provider at your next scheduled visit. A Mini-Cog screening is a simple way to check your brain health and start a conversation about any concerns.
